The Philippine Language School of Victoria (PLSV) was founded 1995 by Perla Adaptar Luetic, the President of LUZVIMINDA Association of Filipino Women in Victoria, Inc. to enable the Filipino Children learn and understand the language and culture. The work began in cooperation with the Filipino Community Council of Victoria and Ethnic School Association of Victoria. The school was designed for non-speakers of Filipino Language, or person of Filipino parents who are Filipino-Australian born and who do not speak the language, children of mixed marriages, scholars, diplomats, businesspeople and individuals who are interested to learn the Filipino language.
The general objectives of the school are to teach and promote the use of Filipino Language for better understanding of the Filipino Cultural heritage, identity and tradition.
Specific Objective is:
The first pilot Filipino classes commenced on 4 February 1995 at Maribyrnong Secondary College. These were run by volunteer teachers: Ruby Mamangun, Mertz Baera, Manuel Asuncion and Maria Violeta Binuya. After four years, the Department of Education granted the school as Single Study Provider and uses the guidelines in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) provided by Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) to attain specific objective. The school offered Filipino Units 1 & 2 and Filipino Units 3 & 4. On 28 February 2016 the PLSV was incorporated and granted a Certificate of Incorporation No. A0094860V. The school is based in Braybrook College, 352 Ballarat Rd. Braybrook, Victoria, 3019. The PLSV operate Filipino Language classes every Saturdays during the school term from 9AM to 12PM.
Current teaching and learning are aligned to the Victorian Curriculum F-10, Languages Version 2.0 in Non-Roman Alphabet Languages. They include activities in speaking, listening, reading, writing and viewing and reflect the intercultural dimension. As PLSV is an accredited VCE Filipino provider, we are using the VCE Filipino Study Design for VCE Filipino Units 1 and 2 and Units 3 and 4.
The Philippine Language School of Victoria teachers are qualified and accredited teachers in Australia. They have attended Certificate IV in Community Languages and other professional development training conducted by Community Languages Victoria. All teachers and volunteers have current Working with Children Check or VIT registration and have HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation yearly.
The Philippine Language School of Victoria has many years of experience supporting students in developing their Filipino language skills in speaking, reading and writing. We offer Filipino language programs for beginners, adults and students undertaking VCE.
